Senior Care begins with Caring: Dismiss me not

Senior Care begins with Caring: Dismiss me not

Sometimes in a world where immediate gratification, haste, and self- absorbency are on trend, we become oblivious to others in our circle.

Our seniors have valuable insights into the past, as well as avid and important thoughts about the present and future.  So if you feel compelled to exclude, ignore, or avoid time that could be spent with an elder, I hope you ponder the world from an alternate perspective.

Dismiss me not

Dismiss me not,
For I have been
in places, you have never seen.

I recognize the behemoth technology advances,
Their virtues you extol.
I recall the first television, an invention of equal grandeur,
Delivered and plugged in by one person.

Dismiss me not,
For I have been
In places, you have never seen.

Social media and various modalities provide you limitless networking,
To share minutia details of intimacy.
My true measure of a relationship’s testimony,
Is whether we can be together in the same room; quietly.

Dismiss me not,
For I have been
In places, you have never seen.

Financial portfolios; stocks with short and long term yield,
Manipulation, insider trading and price fixing.
In spite of my naivety, I recognize the merit of a real dollar,
Because one day’s hard work yielded equal value.

Dismiss me not,
For I have been
In places, you have never seen.

Locales of exotic nature, corners of the earth beyond imagination,
Financed by tomorrow’s wages.
My travel itinerary, less grandiose, for the work at hand kept me occupied,
On the beaches of Normandy.

Dismiss me not,
For I have been
In places, you have never seen.

The conversation excludes me now, and I have blended into the furniture,
Because some feel I cannot contribute to current events of worldly magnitude.
May you kindly be reminded, that with certainty, if luck prevails,
You will also grow old.
